Teeth Whitening

Brightening your smile is as easy as to visit the dentist for a teeth whitening treatment or you can purchase the home treatment kit for whitening available in the market. Using a mouthwash or a whitening toothpaste, or can try whitening pens, trays or strips are all good ways to help you maintain your oral hygiene.

Sometimes, the teeth can be sensitive after whitening treatment. You need not worry. There are enough options to reduce the pain.

  • Chew gum- According to the scientists, chewing the gum will produce more saliva and this act of chewing would distract the people from pain.
  • By using a sensitivity toothpaste- Potassium nitrate is one of the ingredients present in the sensitivity toothpaste and this would help relieve the pain associated with tooth sensitivity.
  • Avoid whitening for a while- Stop using whitening products and give your teeth a break.

Teeth whitening would lighten up your teeth and help remove any kind of stain and discoloration. This whitening procedure is the most common cosmetic dental procedure as it can greatly improve how your teeth look. Whitening is not a one-time procedure and it must be repeated several times in order to maintain the bright color.

Enamel is referred to as the outer layer of the tooth. The white color of the natural teeth is created by the scattering and reflection of light from the enamel and also combined with the color of dentin under it. Your genes would affect the smoothness and thickness of the enamel. If you have a thin enamel, the color of the dentin will be showed mostly. The smoothness and roughness of the enamel also determine the color and reflection of light. A thin coating is formed on the enamel every single day. This tooth enamel also contains pores which can hold stains. The common reasons for the teeth to get stained are:

  • By using tobacco
  • Not taking good care of your teeth
  • By drinking coffee, tea, cola, and red wine.

Aging is a huge factor for darkening your teeth as the enamel gets thinner and dentin becomes darker. There is also a possibility for the stains to occur inside the tooth. These are known as intrinsic stains. Exposure to fluoride will cause intrinsic stains to occur while teeth are developing. Tetracycline antibiotics is another cause for these stains. They can stain a child’s teeth who is below 8 years. Trauma may also darken the tooth.

Whitening is not a permanent solution. The stains will come back after some time. If you smoke or have a lot of items such as tea, coffee, etc. will definitely darken your teeth in about a month after whitening is done. If these sources are avoided, then do not have to go for whitening treatment for another 6 to 12 months. Re-whitening can be done at the dentist’s clinic or at home. If you have a whitening agent and custom-made mouthpiece at home, you can whiten your teeth more often. The whitening schedule can be discussed with your dentist.
